My Introduction To SensePilot
Every once in awhile someting comes across my desk that feels less like a product pitch and more like a shift in the underlying economics of access. When Mike Hazlewood reached out to me via LinkedIn after reading Top Tech Tidbits for a few months, and we connected from the UK to the U.S. over Zoom on March 24, 2026, that was my reaction to SensePilot.
Actually Accessible Access Technology
What caught my attention about SensePilot is not just that it offers hands-free Windows PC control using a standard webcam, and now speech, but that it does so through a lower-cost, simpler access model than many people have come to expect. In assistive technology, that matters, because affordability, setup friction, and hardware dependency still determine who gets access and who gets left waiting.
The Access Model Is the Story
Let me start with the part that matters most.
SensePilot is software for Windows 10 and 11 that uses a standard webcam, and optionally a microphone, to let a user control a computer hands-free. Head movement, facial gestures, and speech can be translated into cursor movement, clicks, and keyboard actions. Put simply: it is being positioned not only as a head mouse, but as a broader hands-free control layer for PC use.
A standard webcam. That is the point.
In accessibility, the most important innovation is not always the flashiest one. Often times it is the solution that reduces the number of extra things a person has to buy, mount, configure, maintain, and explain. SensePilot caught my attention because it appears to move in exactly that direction: toward commodity hardware, lighter deployment, and a lower barrier to trial.
That’s a big deal.
A lot of AT adoption still breaks down at the same predictable points: cost, complexity, procurement delays, hardware compatibility, and the simple reality that specialized setups often remain out of reach for the people who could benefit from them most. A product that starts with hardware many people already have, a webcam, and in some cases a microphone, immediately changes that conversation.
Why This Matters to Me as an Engineer
As an engineer myself I’m always interested in the architecture of a solution as much as the solution itself. What I find compelling here is not just the feature list. It’s the design logic.
SensePilot is built around the idea that access can be expanded by repurposing familiar, widely available hardware into something genuinely useful. That is a different proposition from building yet another access tool that depends on expensive, specialized equipment before a user can even begin.
That is also why I think this has implications beyond a single product category.
Yes, the obvious use case is hands-free computer access for people with limited dexterity or reach. That alone is important. But the model reaches further. SensePilot has also been framed in relation to gaming, and it has been discussed in connection with AAC-adjacent input, including switch scanning and use alongside joysticks and switches. That tells me we are not looking at a one-note concept. We are looking at a platform idea that may be useful across multiple access contexts.
And that, to me, is where things get interesting.
When a product is flexible enough to sit at the intersection of desktop access, gaming access, and communication-adjacent input, the AT community should pay attention, not because every user will want it, and not because every use case will fit, but because flexible access models tend to travel further than narrowly locked ones.
Affordability Is Not a Footnote. It’s the Product.
Another reason SensePilot caught my attention is that the pricing is concrete, understandable, and relatively approachable.
The product offers a 30-day free trial, followed by pricing at €9 per month ($9.81 USD), €99 per year ($107.91 USD), or €199 ($216.91 USD) for a lifetime license on one device. In a sector where cost can quietly become the deciding factor before a user even gets to a trial, those numbers matter.
I’m not saying price alone makes a product good. It does not.
But I am saying that price determines whether a product can realistically enter the evaluation stage for more people. And too often in AT, that stage never happens. A lower-cost path into hands-free computing is not a minor detail; it is central to whether real-world adoption can widen.
The broader message is clear: access does not scale only through better features. It also scales through better entry points.
This Is Early, But It’s Not Noise
SensePilot is still an early-stage company. That needs to be said clearly. But early-stage does not mean unserious, and this is not a case where the public story consists of nothing but buzzwords and a landing page.
What gives this company weight, in my view, is the pattern of external recognition it has already accumulated in a relatively short period of time.
SensePilot’s origin story traces back to May 2024, when the team says it formed during the AI Lithuania Hackathon, built an initial prototype within a week, and placed second. By July 9, 2024, the company had been incorporated in Lithuania. Then the recognition began to stack up.
In December 2024, SensePilot won the inaugural Contentsquare Foundation Accessibility Innovation Prize and received €10,000. In 2025, it appeared in TechChill’s Top 50 Baltic Startups List, participated in the Startup Lithuania GameTech Accelerator, and continued to show up across the accessibility and innovation ecosystem. In December 2025, it won the ITU Accessible Europe pitching category for physical disabilities. By 2026, it had been named a Zero Project Awardee.
That does not prove everything. It does not prove long-term adoption. It does not prove market dominance. It does not remove the need for scrutiny.
But it does tell you something important: serious people, serious programs, and serious organizations have been paying attention.
And in a crowded field where many ideas never leave the demo stage, that matters.
Why Mike Hazlewood Is Worth Watching Too
Mike Hazlewood is publicly presented as SensePilot’s co-founder and CEO, and the public picture of his role is fairly clear: sales, business development, and product management. In other words, he is the outward-facing operator, the person helping shape the company’s partnerships, positioning, and market presence.
That is worth noting because assistive technology is full of products that are technically interesting but commercially fragile. A good idea still has to be explained, distributed, priced, supported, and sustained. Mike appears to be operating in that lane.
And from my vantage point as a publisher, that is no small thing.
Products do not reach the community simply because they exist. They reach the community because someone can communicate the problem, define the value, secure attention, build trust, and keep momentum alive long enough for the product to become part of real decision-making. SensePilot’s public trajectory suggests that is happening.
The Limitations Still Matter
Now for the counterpoint, because this part is important.
No single access method is for everyone. It never is.
SensePilot may be promising, but it is still a young product, and the public record is much richer on awards, program participation, and product positioning than it is on financing, revenue, or deep technical disclosure. Public materials do not meaningfully spell out the underlying implementation stack, and no relevant patents or academic publications have surfaced in the public record so far.
There are also practical deployment considerations. SensePilot’s own public-facing materials have acknowledged that some antivirus or endpoint-security tools may flag the software because it controls cursor input at the operating-system level, which can require allowlisting. That is not unusual for software operating close to system input, but it is still the kind of friction that matters in real environments.
And because this is still an early-stage company, the publicly visible user numbers remain modest. An 80-user beta cohort and later signals of roughly 200 users are meaningful for a young assistive-technology startup, but they are not mass-scale adoption.
All of that should temper hype without diminishing the opportunity.
Awards are useful. So are accelerator placements. So are strong demos and good intentions. But the long game in assistive technology is always the same: reliability, usability, support, and whether people can actually integrate the tool into everyday life.
That is the standard.
Why the Wider AT Community Should Be Watching
Here’s the bigger reason I think SensePilot deserves attention.
It reflects a broader shift in how access tools may develop over the next several years: less dependence on specialized hardware, more use of standard consumer devices, more software-defined access, and more overlap between accessibility, mainstream computing, gaming, and speech-driven interaction.
That convergence is not theoretical anymore. It’s already happening.
SensePilot sits right in the middle of that trend. It has been described as a head mouse, a hands-free PC controller, a gaming-related access tool, and a speech-enabled input option. It is also priced and packaged in a way that suggests the company understands a very old truth in our field: the best AT in the world does not matter if too few people can realistically get to it.
From where I sit, that is why the wider AT community should be watching. Not because we need to declare winners early. Not because every emerging tool should be treated like a revolution. But because when a product combines affordability, simplicity, and credible external validation, it deserves more than a passing glance.
It deserves sustained attention.
Practical Implications / What This Means
For users and families, the implication is straightforward: SensePilot represents a potentially more accessible path into hands-free computing than many people may assume is possible. A 30-day trial and a standard webcam-based model make experimentation easier than it would be with more specialized setups.
For AT professionals and evaluators, it is a reminder that lower-cost, software-driven options should not be treated as an afterthought. Tools like this may not replace existing access methods, but they may expand the range of viable choices, especially for users who need an additional or alternative way to interact with a PC.
For developers, startup founders, and the companies building the next generation of access tools, the lesson is equally important: the market is paying attention to solutions that lower friction, not just raise technical ambition. Simplicity, compatibility, and price are not secondary concerns. They are often the deciding ones.
And for the broader accessibility ecosystem, publishers, advocates, funders, and community leaders, SensePilot is a useful case study in what happens when a product shows up with a clear access thesis, a practical pricing model, and enough external recognition to move beyond novelty.
My Final Thoughts
What caught my attention about SensePilot was not just the software. It was the model.
A standard webcam, optional speech, Windows-based hands-free control, relatively approachable pricing, and a growing list of external signals that suggest this is more than a clever demo. That combination is worth watching closely. Bottom line: in a field where access is too often slowed by cost and complexity, any tool that meaningfully lowers both deserves the AT community’s attention.
